Help Your Grandchildren Discover the Bible’s Big Story, One Shared Moment at a Time

You want your grandchildren to know more than a handful of Bible stories. You want them to know the God who speaks through Scripture, to recognize the hope we have in Jesus, and to learn where to turn when life becomes difficult.

But how do you begin? Especially when your time together is limited, their attention wanders, or you don’t feel equipped to explain the whole Bible?

Begin with a shared moment, not a perfect lesson. Open God’s Word. Make room for curiosity. Let your grandchildren see that following Jesus is not simply something you talk about. It is the life you are learning to live.

God’s Story, Our Story Family Devotion and Cards Bundle, by Andrew and Charlotte Ollerton, offers a practical way to begin that journey together.

Help them see one great story, not disconnected pieces

A child may know about Noah, David, and the birth of Jesus without understanding how those accounts belong together. Helping grandchildren see the Bible’s unfolding story gives those familiar pieces a larger setting: God creates, people turn away, God keeps His promises, and Jesus brings the hope of redemption and new creation.

This family devotional follows Scripture from Genesis to Revelation through 45 short sessions arranged in nine themes. The accompanying 56-card set adds a hands-on way to see the story unfold. As you work through the sessions, the illustrated cards form a growing Bible storyline on a table or wall.

That display becomes an invitation: “Do you remember this part? What happened next? What have we learned about God?” Instead of treating each visit as a fresh start, you can return to a shared story.

Meet the couple behind the resource

Andrew Ollerton is a theologian, author, and speaker whose work focuses on making the Bible relevant and accessible. He works with Bible Society and created The Bible Course, an eight-session guide to the whole story of Scripture. He also serves as a theology consultant to Bear Grylls on faith-based projects.

Charlotte Ollerton brings her own experience of working with young people. A qualified youth leader, she works in literacy and inclusion in a high school and loves teaching the Bible both at church and at home.

The couple live in south Wales with their three children. Their backgrounds bring together a concern for understanding Scripture and experience helping young people learn. In God’s Story, Our Story, they offer families a structured way to explore the Bible together, with storytelling, Bible reading, questions, prayer, and practical responses.

For grandparents, that is an encouraging combination. You are not being asked to become a lecturer. You are being invited to become a companion in discovery.

Keep Bible time warm, simple, and engaging

Designed for ages five and up, the sessions take about 10–15 minutes. The resource includes nine themed sets, each with four Bible-story sessions and one memory-verse session. Five sessions a week makes a nine-week journey, but grandparents can follow a pace that suits their family.

Try one session after breakfast during a visit, before an afternoon activity, or at a regular time agreed with your grandchildren’s parents. Use the book’s storytelling and short Scripture reading, then leave space for conversation. Let the card placement become a small, satisfying ritual.

For a younger grandchild, invite them to point out something in the illustration or retell part of the story. With an older grandchild, linger over a question. If you have several grandchildren together, allow different answers without turning the moment into a competition.

The aim is not to get through the material as quickly as possible. It is to help God’s Word become familiar, meaningful, and welcome.

Welcome questions without putting faith on trial

Winsome discipleship makes room for honest curiosity. A grandchild’s question need not be a threat to the moment. It may be the very place where a deeper conversation begins.

You might ask, “What surprised you about this story?” or “What does this help us understand about God?” These are suggestions for your own conversations, not quotations from the devotional.

If a question leaves you unsure, a calm answer can build trust: “That is a good question. I don’t know yet. Let’s look into it together.” You model humility while showing that Scripture is worth exploring carefully.

Honor the parents’ role as you plan these times. Ask how you can support what they are teaching at home. Your influence is strongest when love for your grandchildren is joined with respect for their family.

Let the cards keep the conversation going

The physical card set includes Bible-story illustrations, memory-verse cards, and game ideas. Keep the growing display somewhere you can revisit it. Ask a grandchild to help you remember the sequence, practice a verse together, or use the included games to review what you have learned.

For long-distance grandparents, consider agreeing on a regular video call with the parents. The book’s QR codes provide audio storytelling, with videos for the first four sessions. Where practical, keep the book and cards at the grandchild’s home so they can take part in the hands-on activity while you share the conversation.

Build toward resilient faith, without promising a formula

No devotional can guarantee that a child will become a lifelong disciple of Jesus. Faith is not an outcome we can manufacture by completing a schedule.

But we can faithfully nurture the habits that matter: returning to Scripture, asking honest questions, praying in ordinary moments, and learning to put faith into practice. We can show our grandchildren what repentance, forgiveness, courage, and dependence on Jesus look like in real life.

When a difficult day comes, revisit what you have learned about God’s faithfulness. When you make a mistake, apologize. When you pray, invite your grandchild to bring a real concern rather than searching for the “right” words. These moments connect the Bible’s story with the life they are living.

For encouragement in your own calling, Grandparenting with Grace offers a complementary biblical guide to gospel-focused grandparenting. The family devotional gives you a practical shared activity; your everyday example gives that activity a living context.

Begin with one faithful step

God’s Story, Our Story Family Devotion and Cards Bundle includes a physical 192-page paperback and 56 illustrated cards. It is a tool for opening Scripture together, not another demand to add to an already full family calendar.

Choose a time. Open the book. Listen to your grandchild. Place the first card.

You do not have to explain everything today. You can help your grandchildren take one more step toward knowing God’s Word and following Jesus, while reminding them that they have a grandparent who is glad to walk beside them.
